FAQ’S ABOUT TRAINING BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

What to bring with you?
It is always best to arrive early to get changed and orientate yourself. If it is your first class then please wear t-shirt and shorts, clothing that you do not mind getting
sweaty! Monday and Saturday classes are done in a Gi.

Wednesday and Friday’s classes are done without a Gi, shorts and T-Shirt are ideal for this session. It is not a requirement to have a Gi to train when you start. Once you know that BJJ is for you, please talk to the instructor about where to buy Gi’s, sizes, brands etc.

Always bring a bottle of water as BJJ is thirsty work!

How long are the Classes?
The classes are 2 hours long and broadly entail a warm up consisting of movement specific drills and other conditioning work which last for 30-40 mins. After this we get to learning techniques! These will be demonstrated by the instructor and students will partner up and practice the techniques together in pairs.

This normally lasts 40 min and during this time the instructor will watch and correct any mistakes. The remainder of the class will be live sparring (commonly known as rolling) where students will try to use the techniques they know in sparring conditions.

Do I need to be fit for my first class?
A common question is ‘do I need to be fit to train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?’ The answer is no, regular training in class will get you where you need to be!

Are all the classes suitable for a beginner?

Yes, all classes accommodate for a range of abilities. However, the Fundamentals classes on Monday and Wednesday evening (6.30-7.30pm) are specifically designed for the new members and focuses on technique and movement you need as a new grappler.
